A standard tip at a full-service restaurant in the US is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill. For excellent service, 20–25% is common. At quick-service or counter-service spots, 10–15% or a flat dollar amount is typical.
For food delivery, 15–20% of the order total is standard. If it's a large order, bad weather, or a long distance, consider tipping on the higher end. Many people also add a flat $3–$5 for smaller orders.
Add the tip to the total bill, then divide by the number of people. Our calculator does this automatically — just enter the bill, choose your tip, and set the number of people to split between.
In the US, tipping is a deeply rooted cultural expectation. Not tipping at a sit-down restaurant is generally considered rude, as servers typically rely on tips for a significant portion of their income.
