How sales tax is calculated

Sales tax is calculated as a percentage of the total pre-tax price of a retail sale. The formula is simple:

Sales Tax = Pre-Tax Price × Tax Rate (%)

In many US jurisdictions, the combined sales tax rate includes both the base state tax rate and additional county, city, or district local sales tax rates. To calculate reverse sales tax from a grand total, divide the total price by (1 + Tax Rate).

Sales tax is a consumption tax imposed by state and local governments on the sale of goods and certain services. Merchants collect it at the point of sale and remit it to the tax authority.
A combined sales tax rate is the sum of the base state tax rate plus any additional county, city, or special district sales tax rates applicable in that location.
Five US states do not impose a general state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon (often referred to as NOMAD states). However, local jurisdictions in Alaska may impose local sales tax.
To find the pre-tax price from a total amount that includes sales tax, divide the total amount by (1 + Tax Rate decimal). For example, with an 8% tax rate, divide total by 1.08.
Sales tax rates can change multiple times a year, typically on the first day of a quarter (January 1, April 1, July 1, October 1), as state or local legislation takes effect.
